Frequently Asked Questions About Melt Values
How is melt value calculated?
Melt value = weight in troy ounces x purity factor x current spot price. For example, 10 grams of 14K gold = (10 / 31.1035) x (14 / 24) x spot price.
What is the difference between 14K and 18K gold?
14K gold contains 58.5% pure gold, while 18K contains 75.0%. Higher karat means more pure gold and usually a higher melt value for the same weight.
What is sterling silver purity?
Sterling silver is .925 fineness, meaning 92.5% silver and 7.5% alloy. Fine silver is .999, and old US coin silver is often .900.
How much is my scrap jewelry worth?
This calculator gives theoretical melt value. Actual dealer payouts are typically below melt value to account for refining costs, spread, and business margin.
What is a troy ounce?
A troy ounce is the standard unit for precious metals and equals 31.1035 grams. Spot prices for gold and silver are quoted per troy ounce.
